Center for Water, Environment

Ala Taleb Obaidat, Director of the center

Overview

The shortage and the limited portable resources of drinking water is one of the major problems facing the world in general and our region in particular.  Studies indicate that Jordan is one of the poorest countries in the world that have water sources. Statistics show that more than half of the world will suffer from a shortage of water resources and safe drinking water in the future, By the year 2025, if current  trends continue, per capita water supply will fall from the current 145 m3 / yr to only 91 m3 /yr, putting Jordan in the category of having an absolute water shortage. So there is an urgent need for a new strategy to look for new and different resources to provide enough sustainable drinking water for the next coming years.

The Dead See is the world's richest source of natural salts and so many kinds of rich minerals, hiding wonderful treasures that accumulated throughout thousands of years with a unique source of hypertonic water and thermo-mineral springs, which can be used in multiple areas, whether in the fields of industry, or the fields of medicine, where the rich salty water of the Dead Sea and its neutral mud is considered to be  the best successful treatment of skin diseases,  and there are many industrial products can be produced from its water and minerals.
