Scientific research constitutes the fundamental pillar of higher education institutions. Through scientific research, the institution elevates the quality of its inputs from faculty members and students and distinguishes its graduates, in addition to raising the level of its facilities and equipment. Through basic scientific research, knowledge is enhanced and developed among faculty members who transfer it to students through renewed and emerging course materials. Through applied scientific research, the university reflects the needs of society, elevates it, and networks with industry and business entities, supporting them with knowledge and acquiring practical skills and applications from them.
Accordingly, Philadelphia University has been aware of this essential component of its operations and activities since its inception. The Scientific Research Council was established in 1995, and regulations governing the work of the then Deanship of Scientific Research were developed, along with guidelines governing the engagement of faculty members in various research fields. Philadelphia University allocates at least 3% of its budget to support research activities and supply colleges and academic departments with the necessary equipment and facilities to support scientific research. The Deanship also contributes to facilitating the engagement of faculty members in national and international research fields and conducting community studies related to the local community. The university does not hesitate to approve financial support for any research project submitted by faculty members after conducting the usual evaluation. Financial support opportunities for scientific research are also available from other sources such as the National Scientific Research Fund, Shoman Foundation, Erasmus Plus, and others. The university believes that forming research groups and identifying research focus areas at the university level, whether within or across disciplines, are means to elevate the level of scientific research at the university and enhance the importance of its outputs.
Regarding graduate studies, the main purpose of the Deanship of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies is to offer post-bachelor's degree academic programs for those aspiring to obtain qualifications that enable them to develop their expertise in their professional fields and enhance it with more knowledge and skills, or enable them to join the academic community in the fields of education and scientific research. In addition to developing individual knowledge and skills, graduate studies programs work to develop the educational process in undergraduate programs and elevate the level of scientific research at the university. They also enhance the attraction of distinguished faculty members and students, which increases the university's competitiveness and elevates its outputs.
Philadelphia University has recognized the importance of graduate studies since its inception. The Graduate Studies Council was formed in 1995 and was assigned the task of developing the regulations and instructions for graduate studies programs at the university, as well as providing advice to colleges and academic departments planning to offer graduate studies programs at the university. In 2001, the university established the Deanship of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies in preparation for launching graduate studies programs. The university launched two master's programs in Computer Science (Faculty of Information Technology) and English Language and Literature (Faculty of Arts and Arts) in 2005. In 2013, the university launched two additional master's programs in Mechatronics Engineering (Faculty of Engineering and Technology) and Arabic Language and Literature (Faculty of Arts and Arts). In 2017, the university offered two additional master's programs in Accounting (Faculty of Business) and Software Engineering (Faculty of Information Technology). In 2020, the Master's program in Business Law was added at the Faculty of Law. In 2021, the Higher Diploma in Education program was added. At the beginning of 2023, the Pharmaceutical Sciences program (Faculty of Pharmacy), the Genetics and Molecular Diagnostics program (Faculty of Science), and the MBA program (Faculty of Business) were added. The university is also working to enhance the capabilities of several disciplines to expand the base of graduate studies.
